Historical heritage sites of Gujarat are attracting tourists

Gandhinagar: UNESCO celebrates World Heritage Week from 19th November to 25th November every year to promote the importance of preserving cultural and historical heritage. In India too, this week is organized in collaboration with the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to promote historical heritage sites. This year’s theme is “Exploring and Experiencing Diversity”, highlighting the importance of diverse cultural heritages.

Gujarat, which is rich in historical and cultural heritage, has many major heritage sites, which are attracting millions of tourists. According to the data of Gujarat Tourism Department, more than 21 lakh tourists have visited the historical heritage sites of the state in the year 2023-24, which is an important milestone for Gujarat’s tourism.

development of tourism facilities

The Gujarat government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, has started development works at a cost of more than Rs 428 crore to make the historical heritage sites attractive and convenient. These also include attractive activities like light and show in the direction of night tourism, which are providing a special experience to the tourists.

Investment in Vadnagar and Dholavira

Vadnagar, which is the birthplace of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has been given special attention. Basic and modern tourism facilities have been developed in Vadnagar by spending Rs 70 crore in the last three years. The number of tourists increased three times to about 7 lakh in 2023-24, while in 2022-23 the number was only 2.45 lakh.

Development work is also being carried out at Dholavira, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, at a cost of Rs 185 crore. In this, work worth Rs 76 crore is going on under Phase-1. The number of tourists in Dholavira more than doubled to 2.32 lakh in 2023-24, while in 2022-23 the number was 1.41 lakh.

Number of tourists also increased at other major places

Other historical sites of Gujarat like Sun Temple of Modhera, Rani Ki Vav, and Adalaj Ki Vav have also seen an increase in the number of tourists. Tourism facilities have been developed at these places by spending Rs 20 crore, Rs 18 crore and Rs 5 crore respectively. The number of tourists at these destinations increased in 2023-24, which was higher than the figures for 2022-23.

Restoration of historical forts

The Gujarat government has also paid special attention to the preservation of the historical forts of the state. Reconstruction work of Uparkot Fort in Junagadh has been completed at a cost of Rs 74 crore. Apart from this, the Rajmahal and Lakhpat Fort of Amreli are being rebuilt at a cost of Rs 21 crore and Rs 25 crore.

Hafeshwar village got the honor of Best Tourism Heritage Village

Hafeshwar village of Gujarat has been awarded as the Best Tourism Heritage Village in 2024 by the Government of India. To further improve the experience of the tourists visiting here, the state government is developing various tourist facilities at a cost of Rs 10 crore.

New era of heritage tourism in Gujarat

Due to these efforts of Gujarat Government, the historical heritage sites of the state are getting recognition at the global level. These development works will not only provide better experience to the tourists but will also strengthen the economic condition of the state. With this new era of heritage tourism in Gujarat, it is expected that the state will soon make a special mark among the major heritage tourism destinations of the country as well as the world.
