The father of Akshay Shinde, the accused killed in police retaliation in the Badlapur sexual assault case, has filed a petition in the Bombay High Court. In this, he has demanded a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the case. Anna Shinde has alleged in his petition filed through lawyer Amit Katranware that his son was killed in a fake encounter. Lawyer Katranware said, ‘The accused was in custody when he was shot in a fake encounter. This is a brutal murder committed by uniformed criminals.’
According to the report, a bench of Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice Prithviraj Chavan will hear Anna Shinde’s petition on Wednesday. 24-year-old Akshay Shinde was accused of sexually harassing two minor girls in a school in Badlapur in Thane district. Shinde, a contracted sweeper in the school, was arrested on August 17. After the sexual harassment case came to light, there were massive protests in the state. People were demanding strict action in this case.
What does the police claim about Shinde’s death?
Police officials said Shinde was being taken from Taloja jail in Navi Mumbai to Badlapur on Monday evening in connection with an FIR lodged against him on the complaint of his ex-wife when the shootout took place in which he was killed. Officials claimed that Shinde was gunned down near Mumbra bypass when he snatched the pistol of a policeman who was part of the escort team. Police claimed that after he shot an assistant police inspector, another officer opened fire on him and he was declared dead at Kalwa Civil Hospital.
Maharashtra government handed over the investigation to CID
The Maharashtra government on Tuesday said the state Crime Investigation Department (CID) will probe the death of Akshay Shinde. Officials said a team of forensic science experts examined the police vehicle in which Shinde was shot by a policeman on Monday evening. CID officials will also record the statements of Akshay Shinde’s parents, they said. His family members have challenged the police claim that Akshay first fired at a policeman, following which the police retaliated in self-defence, leading to his death.
