Accused Jigu Kumar Sorathi and deceased Bhavini
The Government of India makes continuous efforts to bring back Indian citizens who have committed crimes abroad, but has not yet been successful in bringing back economic criminals like Vijay Mallya, Lalit Modi to India. However, recently an important case has come to light, in which an Indian citizen has been extradited from Britain to India, who absconded after killing his girlfriend there. This is perhaps the first such case in the country in which success has been achieved in extraditing a murderer and getting him punished.
In 2020, Jigu Kumar Sorathi, an Indian national, murdered his fiancee Bhavini in Leicester, UK. Jigu attacked Bhavini several times with a knife, resulting in her death. This case created quite a stir in Gujarat, as Jigu was a resident of Umargaon, Gujarat. After the murder, the accused surrendered himself to the police and gave complete information about the case. Zigu was sentenced to 28 years to life imprisonment by Leicester Court. The court had said that this method of murder cannot be forgiven under any circumstances and the accused had completely ruined the future of his fiancee.
has served four years of punishment
After serving four years in a UK prison, Jigu’s family requested the Indian government to serve his sentence in India if he was extradited to India. The accused was extradited with the cooperation of officials and embassies of both the countries. On 16 December, Jigu was brought from Britain to Delhi with the help of British escort staff. A special team of Surat Police was present in Delhi, which after completing all the paperwork, handed over the accused to Surat Police.
Murderer extradited for the first time
Now Jigu Kumar Sorathi will complete his sentence in Lajpur jail of Surat. Surat Police Commissioner Anupam Singh Gehlot gave information about this and said that this is the first time that a murderer has been extradited and now he will serve his sentence in India. Jigu and Bhavini started living together in UK from 2017 and both had plans of marriage, but due to daily fights between the two, Bhavini refused to marry. Angered by this, Jigu brutally murdered her and then surrendered himself to the police. (Reporter- Shailesh Champaneria)
