37 people, including 27 pilgrims from Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, have been rescued safely from a bus which was stuck on the route due to floods in Gujarat’s Bhavnagar district after an overnight operation. District Magistrate R. Of. Mehta said the bus got stuck on Thursday evening on a bridge built to cross a small river near Koliyak village, however, after an eight-hour long operation, all the pilgrims were rescued safely.

Mehta said, “All the pilgrims were heading towards Bhavnagar to visit the Nishkalank Mahadev temple near Koliyak village. The bridge over the river had submerged due to heavy rains in the area. Despite this, the bus driver decided to cross the river.” He said that rescue workers reached the spot with a mini truck and safely evacuated all the pilgrims, the driver and the sweeper from the vehicle through the rear window of the bus, but more to come. There were challenges.

Mehta said that after evacuating everyone from the bus, the mini truck also got stuck on the road. He said most of the pilgrims were senior citizens. The District Magistrate said, “A big truck was then sent to the incident site and all 37 people were brought through it.” After about eight hours of hard work, all the pilgrims were taken to a safe place at around three in the morning. We have made arrangements for their stay and food in Bhavnagar. We have also got him medically examined.”
