29 people, including 27 pilgrims from Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, were rescued safely from a bus which was stuck on the way due to floods in Gujarat’s Bhavnagar district after an overnight operation. Officials gave this information on Friday. District Magistrate RK Mehta said that the bus got stuck on Thursday evening on a bridge built to cross a small river near Koliyak village. After an operation that lasted for eight hours, all the pilgrims were evacuated safely. The District Magistrate was present at the spot at the time of rescue.
Mehta said, ‘All the pilgrims were going towards Bhavnagar to have darshan at Nishkalank Mahadev temple near Koliyak village. The bridge over the river had submerged due to heavy rains in the area. Despite this, the bus driver decided to cross the river. He told that due to water pressure, the front part of the bus had submerged in the river while the rear part was stuck on the road.
The District Magistrate said that rescue workers reached the spot with a mini truck and safely evacuated all 27 pilgrims, the driver and the cleaner from the vehicle through the rear window of the bus, but there were more challenges ahead. Mehta told that after evacuating everyone from the bus, the mini truck also got stuck on the way. He said most of the pilgrims were senior citizens.
The District Magistrate further said, ‘A big truck was again sent to the incident site and through it all 29 people were brought out from there. After about eight hours of hard work, all the pilgrims were taken to a safe place at around three in the morning. We have made arrangements for their stay and food in Bhavnagar. We have also got his medical tests done.
