Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court Sunita Aggarwal on Monday administered the oath of office to seven newly appointed judges, leading to 39 of their total number 52. The notification of appointment of seven judicial officers as a judge of the Gujarat High Court was issued by the Union Ministry of Law and Justice on 1 May.
These judges took oath: Lakathusain Shamsuddin Pirjad, Ramchandra Thakurdas Vachani, Jayesh Lakhansibhai Odedra, Pranav Rawal, Moolchand Tyagi, Deepak Mansukhlal Vyas and Utkarsh Thakorbhai Desai.
39 Number of judges
Along with the latest appointments, the number of judges in the Gujarat High Court, whose approved number is 52, has increased to 39. Other dignitaries including Law and Justice Minister Rushikesh Patel and Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghvi were present on the occasion.
More than 17 lakh cases pending in Gujarat High Court
Union Minister of State for Law and Justice (Independent Charge) and Parliamentary Work Arjun Ram Meghwal responded to the question of Rajya Sabha member Parimal Nathwani in Rajya Sabha on December 19, 2024 that 1,70,963 cases are pending in the Gujarat High Court, while 16,90,643 cases are pending in the district and subordinate courts of Gujarat. According to the minister’s statement, a total of 20 posts of judges were vacant in the Gujarat High Court, while the number of sanctioned posts is 52. In the district and subordinate courts of Gujarat, 535 posts of judges were vacant, while the number of sanctioned posts is 1720.
More than 82 thousand cases pending in Supreme Court
In the House, the minister had said that a total of 82,640 cases are pending in the Supreme Court of India, 61,80,878 cases are pending in the country’s High Courts and 4,62,34,646 cases are pending in the district and subordinate courts of the country. According to his statement, a total of 368 posts were vacant as compared to a total of 1122 sanctioned posts of judges in the High Courts of the country, while a total of 5262 posts were vacant compared to the total 25741 sanctioned posts of judges in the district and subordinate courts of the country. In the Supreme Court of India, only one post was vacant as compared to 34 sanctioned posts of judges. (Input-PTI)
