Taking a historic decision, the royal family of Jamnagar, Gujarat appointed former Indian cricketer Ajay Jadeja as his successor. Jam Saheb Shatrushalysinghji Maharaj announced his heir on Friday. Jadeja, 53, who has played 15 Test matches and 196 ODIs for India, is a descendant of the royal Jamnagar family. He was born in 1971 in Jamnagar, then known as Navanagar. His father Daulatsinhji Jadeja is a cousin of Shatrusalyasinhji, who announced this through a letter late on Friday night.
As per TOI report, the letter said, ‘The festival of Dussehra marks the day the Pandavas emerged victorious from exile. On this auspicious day, I have solved my dilemma as Ajay Jadeja has accepted the offer to become my successor. I am confident that Ajay Jadeja will prove to be a boon for the people of Jamnagar and will serve them with dedication. I am very grateful to him.
The former Indian cricketer’s relatives include legendary cricketers KS Ranjitsinhji and KS Duleepsinhji, after whom the Ranji Trophy and Duleep Trophy are named. Shatrusalyasinhji was also a first-class cricketer and was the last person to hold the title of Maharaja of Nawanagar. The prestigious Ranji Trophy domestic cricket championship is named after his ancestor Sir Ranjitsinhji Vibhaji Jadeja, commonly known as Ranji . He was the ruler of Nawanagar from 1907 to 1933.
According to Aaj Tak report, present Jam Saheb Shatrushalysinghji has no children. In such a situation, when he had to announce his heir, he chose Ajay Jadeja. Jam Saheb Shatrushalysinghji’s father Digvijay Singh remained king for 33 years. At the same time, the name of Ajay Jadeja, who was a part of the Indian cricket team from 1992 to 2000, came up in fixing. Because of which he was banned. In 2003, the Delhi High Court lifted the ban imposed on him but he could not play cricket again.
