Omar Abdullah’s cabinet has started efforts in the very first meeting to give full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. Omar Abdullah’s cabinet had passed a proposal to grant full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. This proposal has now been approved by Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha. The Cabinet of Jammu and Kashmir has authorized talks with the Prime Minister and the Center on the issue of restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. In this regard, Omar Abdullah will go to Delhi and discuss with the Centre.
How will Jammu and Kashmir get full state status?
The process of Jammu and Kashmir getting full statehood will be completed through several constitutional and legal steps. The role of state government, central government and Parliament is very important in this process. Let us know how Jammu and Kashmir can get full statehood-
The first step has been taken by the state cabinet. Omar Abdullah’s cabinet has passed a resolution demanding the restoration of full statehood to the state. This proposal has been approved by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha. Now this proposal will be sent to the Central Government.
What will be the role of the Centre?
Now this proposal will go to the Central Government, where it will be discussed in depth. The Central Government will consider the proposal and after reviewing it will take a decision on presenting it in Parliament. When the Central Government presents this proposal in the Parliament, then this proposal will be discussed and voted in both the houses of the Parliament – Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. After getting majority in favor of the proposal, it will be sent to the President.
Constitutional amendment will be needed
Granting full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir would require some amendments to the Indian Constitution. At present, Jammu and Kashmir is a Union Territory which got this status after the removal of Article 370 in 2019. To give it back the status of a full state, changes will have to be made under Articles 3 and 4 of the Constitution, so that its political and administrative structure can be changed.
Jammu and Kashmir will become a full state only with the seal of the President
After being passed by the Parliament, the proposal will get the approval of the President. When the President gives his approval to this, then the necessary amendments in the Constitution will be implemented and Jammu and Kashmir will get the status of a full state.
