During the last hearing, the Supreme Court suggested recognition of Aadhaar card, ration card and voter ID as a voter identity. When the court questioned the validity of the documents, the Election Commission replied that no name can be added to the voter list only on the basis of Aadhaar card, ration card or already issued voter identity card.
65 lakh names will be removed from voter list in Bihar
The Election Commission had released the first phase of figures of SIR in Bihar on 27 July, stating that the names of 65 lakh people in Bihar would be removed from the voter list. Of these, 22 lakh voters have been dead, 36 lakh people have been permanently transferred, and the names of about 7 lakh people have been found in more than one place. The opposition is accusing the Election Commission of working in favor of BJP, while BJP says that the opposition is accusing it for fear of defeat.
Opposition attacked government and Election Commission
Opposition parties are constantly opposing this issue. On Monday, opposition MPs led by Rahul Gandhi tried to march till the Election Commission. However, the Election Commission had called 30 opposition leaders for talks, the Leader of the opposition wanted to go to the commission with 200 MPs. The police stopped the MPs trying to march without permission and took them into custody. Rahul Gandhi said that this fight is not political, but there is a fight to save the constitution and the right to ‘One Man, One Vote’, so they need a clean and right voter list.
