Bharatiya Janata Party’s Punjab unit president Sunil Jakhar did not attend the state unit meeting on Monday, after which the party’s state in-charge Vijay Rupani clarified that he had gone to Delhi for some personal work. He said that rumors keep flying that Jakhar has not resigned from the post of State President.
Senior BJP leader Jakhar has not been participating in the organizational activities of the party for the last several days. Last week, he did not even participate in the party’s membership campaign meeting, after which the news came that he was going to resign from the post of president soon. Punjab BJP had last week rejected media reports that Jakhar had resigned from the post of state president. The party had described it as ‘completely baseless’. Speaking to reporters on Monday, Rupani, who was the Chief Minister of Gujarat, said that Jakhar had gone to Delhi for some personal work. Terming Jakhar’s resignation as a rumour, Rupani said that Jakhar ji has not resigned. He is the president of the state unit and we are working under his leadership.
Rupani said that Jakhar was present in the workshop on membership campaign. When asked whether Jakhar was angry with the party, Rupani said there was no such thing. He will return to the state after completing his work in a few days. Jakhar was appointed as the Punjab BJP chief in July 2023. He had taken charge as the state president in place of BJP MLA Ashwini Sharma. Three months after the Punjab Congress lost the assembly elections, Jakhar left the Congress and joined the BJP.
