Kolkata victim's family put under house arrest, father offered money; Congress claims

Congress’ West Bengal unit chief Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury made a big claim on the Kolkata rape-murder case on Saturday. He accused the police of detaining the parents of the female doctor who was allegedly raped and murdered. Chowdhury reached the doctor’s house and talked to her parents. After this, he also alleged that the police had offered money to the father to cremate the body quickly.

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said, ‘I went to the doctor’s family’s house and talked to them for a long time. The police have kept the family under house arrest. They are not allowing them to come out of the house on various pretexts. A barricade has been erected around them, CISF has no information about this.’ Chowdhury alleged that the Kolkata Police followed the state government’s instructions and offered money to the victim’s father. During this, he was told that his daughter’s body should be cremated without any delay.

‘I will never let my daughters become doctors’

On August 9, the body of a trainee doctor was found in the seminar hall of the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Junior doctors have been on strike since that day, demanding justice for her and stronger safety measures at health establishments. Doctors from the national capital New Delhi gathered at Jantar Mantar on Saturday. They said that without a central law to protect women health workers, women doctors will never feel safe at the workplace. “I will never let my daughters become doctors here. Can you imagine that all of us women doctors are scared now? We feel scared while working and we need protection. Can you imagine that the victim was raped and murdered at the workplace?”

Teachers took out a march demanding justice

Teachers from various schools on Saturday took out a protest march demanding strict punishment for the accused in the rape and murder of a doctor in a Kolkata hospital. The protesters marched from Sealdah station to Shyambazar, near which the government hospital is located. The protesting teachers raised slogans like ‘We want justice’ and ‘We want justice in RG Kar case’. Demanding speedy punishment for the culprits, the teachers said they want the safety of women at workplaces to be ensured. They said that persons protecting the culprits should also be given strict punishment. This was the second rally organised by teachers against the rape and murder of the trainee doctor.
