In a major reshuffle in West Bengal, the Congress has appointed senior leader Subhankar Sarkar as the new state Congress president with immediate effect. Sarkar has replaced outgoing WBPCC president and former Lok Sabha MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, who resigned from the post after losing the recent Lok Sabha elections from the Baharampur constituency. He was defeated by TMC’s new candidate and former cricketer Yusuf Pathan.
After the party’s central leadership announced his appointment as the state unit president, Sarkar said, “The state Congress will work according to the wishes of party workers in Bengal.” He also said that the wishes of the people will be the most important factor in choosing the future path of the Congress in the state. Sarkar was the secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) and was handling the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and Mizoram.
With the new appointment, Sarkar has been relieved from his current post of AICC secretary. The party has also appointed two working presidents in Jammu and Kashmir. Giving this information, Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal said that party president Mallikarjun Kharge has relieved Subhankar Sarkar from all other responsibilities of the party and asked him to start work with immediate effect.
He said that the party has praised the work of senior leader Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary, who has been the state Congress president till now, and said that the party has become stronger in the state during his tenure. Along with this, Congress has appointed MK Bhardwaj and Bhanu Mahajan as working presidents of the state Congress in Jammu and Kashmir.
