In the case of the rape and murder of a junior doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College, the CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) has alleged that some records at the Tala police station were “falsified” and some were “altered”. The investigating agency told a special court in Kolkata that CCTV footage has also been seized from the police station.
The CBI also informed the court that the seized CCTV footage has been sent to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) for further investigation. The CBI questioned the officer-in-charge of the police station Abhijit Mandal and former principal of the medical college Sandip Ghosh. The CBI, which conducted custodial interrogation of Tala police station in-charge Abhijit Mandal and former principal of the medical college Sandip Ghosh, informed the court that its investigation has revealed “new/additional” facts which show that some false records related to the case were created/altered at the Tala police station.
Mandal and Ghosh were produced in court on Wednesday at the end of their remand, where the special court extended their judicial custody till September 30. The CBI also alleged that there was an “unnecessary delay of two days” in seizing clothes and belongings of prime accused Sanjay Roy, which could have led to loss of crucial evidence against him. Prime accused Sanjay Roy was arrested the very next day of the incident, when there were already indications of his involvement in the crime. The agency is now probing any possible criminal conspiracy between Roy, Ghosh and Mandal in the case.
It is noteworthy that on August 9, the body of a female trainee doctor was found in the seminar hall of R.G. Kar Medical College. The post-mortem report revealed that she was first raped and then murdered. At present, Sanjay Roy has been named as the only accused in the case. The case has sparked widespread protests across the country. Junior doctors of Kolkata refused to return to their duty and demanded justice for the victim. The family of the deceased doctor has also accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Kolkata Police of covering up the crime and offering money to the family.
