A major scam has come to light in the MNREGA scheme in Dahod district of Gujarat. There has been a disturbance in the construction of roads between 2021 and 2025 in Dhanpur and three other villages of Deogarh Baria taluka. It is alleged that 35 agencies together have scammed more than Rs 71 crore.
Balwant Khabar and TDO arrested
DSP Bhandari was investigating the matter. The complaint included the names of Balwant Khabar and Kiran Khabar, sons of Panchayat Minister Bachubhai Khabar. On Wednesday, Balwant Khabar filed an anticipatory bail application in Dahod Court, which he later withdrew. After this, today news has come that Balwant Khabar and TDO (taluka development officer) Darshan Patel have been arrested.
In fact, two of the 35 agencies who are alleged are in the name of Raj Traders and Raj Construction, Minister Bachubhai Khabar’s sons Balwant and Kiran Khabar. The scam was exposed by the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) in April this year, after which the investigation was going on.
What is MNREGA scheme?
Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) is a law implemented by the Government of India on September 7, 2005. Its objective is to provide at least 100 days of guaranteed wages in a financial year to every family in rural areas, whose adult members are willing to perform unskilled manual labor. The scheme aims to increase rural livelihood security, create sustainable rural assets and ensure social inclusion of women, scheduled castes and scheduled tribes. MNREGA is mainly implemented by Gram Panchayats and the participation of contractors is prohibited.
