Congress has made Akash Sharma its candidate for the by-election to be held on Raipur-South assembly seat of Chhattisgarh. Akash is currently the state president of Youth Congress and before that has been the state president of National Students Union of India (NSUI). He will face Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Sunil Soni.

BJP leader and former state minister Brijmohan Aggarwal was the MLA from this assembly seat, but after becoming the Lok Sabha MP from Raipur parliamentary constituency, he resigned from the post of MLA and since then this seat is vacant.

Chhattisgarh State Congress President Deepak Baij claimed that Congress candidate Akash Sharma from Raipur South Assembly constituency will win the elections with huge votes. The Congress candidate is young and has wide public support. They are also combative.

Badge said on Tuesday that on the contrary, the Bharatiya Janata Party candidate has been accused of inactivity while being an MP. The people of Raipur had given Sunil Soni an opportunity as MP but he could not live up to the public expectations. Congress has given a chance to active youth to compete with them. Talking about the history of this seat, BJP has been winning from here ever since this seat came into existence in the year 2008. Brijmohan Aggarwal, who has been an 8-time MLA, represents this seat. Aggarwal has been undefeated in the assembly elections since 1990, but in the general elections held in June this year, he became MP from Raipur seat, due to which this by-election is being held.

Raipur City South is an urban seat, where Congress has never won. Voting for the by-election will take place on November 13, while counting of votes will take place on November 23. The last date for filing nominations is October 25.

In last year’s assembly elections, BJP had won 54 out of 90 seats in the state, while Congress had won 35 and Gondwana Gantantra Party had won one seat.

Raipur City South constituency has 2,70,936 registered voters, including 1,33,713 males, 1,37,171 females and 52 transgender voters.

Officials said a total of 253 polling stations have been set up for the by-election and five companies of security personnel will be deployed to ensure smooth and safe voting.
