Shibu soren: Former Jharkhand Chief Minister, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) founder and ‘Dishom Guru’ known as ‘Dishom Guru’, Shibu Soren is no longer among us. On 4 August 2025, he breathed his last at Sir Gangaram Hospital in Delhi. 81 -year -old Soren had been ill for a long time and was hospitalized for about one and a half months. The news of his death raged not only Jharkhand, but a wave of mourning raged across the country. Illness and Demise
Shibu Soren had been struggling with serious diseases for the past few years. He had diabetes, heart disease, kidney failure and other aged problems. He got a brain stroke in June 2025, after which he was admitted to Sir Gangaram Hospital in Delhi. Dr. A. Of. Bhalla and Neurology, the ICU team were constantly overseeing them. During treatment, his health also improved for some time, but in the first week of August, the situation suddenly deteriorated and he breathed his last on 4 August.
Early Life and Family Background
Shibu Soren was born on 11 January 1944 in Nimra village of Dumka district of Jharkhand. He belonged to an ordinary Santhal tribal family. His father Sobran Soren was a farmer, who was allegedly murdered by Mahajans. This painful incident burned the spark of fight against exploitation in the mind of young Shibu Soren.
Shibu Soren completed his schooling in the village itself. Although he did not get much opportunity to get higher education, the consciousness that he developed against social injustice and economic exploitation was enough to establish him as a public.
Beginning of political awareness became a fight for tribal identity
In the 1970s, Shibu Soren launched a movement against the zamindars and Mahajans at Santhal Pargana. He saw how the lands of tribals are being looted and they are being pierced in unemployment. In 1972, he founded the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), which was aimed at protecting tribal rights and struggling to demand a separate Jharkhand state. The nature of his movement was social, cultural and political.
Shibu Soren gained increasingly popularity in tribal society and he was addressed as ‘Guruji’. He went from village to village spread awareness and gave an organized appearance to the mass movement.
Demand and Struggle for a Separate Jharkhand State
In the late 1970s and in the 80s, Shibu Soren launched a tremendous movement to demand a separate state. The Jharkhand separate state movement put pressure on the Bihar government and the central government. He raised his voice from Parliament to the road. The result of his efforts eventually came to light on 15 November 2000, when Jharkhand became an independent state after separating from Bihar. This is considered to be the biggest political victory in Shibu Soren’s life.
Contribution in Lok Sabha and Ministerial Position in Lok Sabha
Shibu Soren was a member of the Lok Sabha several times. He first won the Dumka Lok Sabha seat in 1980. He then reached Lok Sabha in 1989, 1991, 1996, 2002, 2004 and 2009.

– In 2004, when the UPA government came to power, he was made the Minister of Coal.
During the tenure of the Ministry of Coal, he tried to curb illegal mining and contract culture.

1. In 2005, he took over the post of CM for the first time, but had to resign in 10 days due to not being able to prove the majority.
2. In 2008, he became the Chief Minister for the second time, but had to resign after withdrawing the support of allies.
3. He became CM for the third time in 2009, but this time also the government could not last long due to political instability.

A large chapter of his life was the Shribar Mukherjee murder case, in which he was convicted. However, he later acquitted the Supreme Court.
The matter greatly affected his image. But his popularity in tribal society did not affect much. He is still remembered with reverence by the name of ‘Guruji’.
Determination Physical Health and Final Moments
Shibu Soren’s health was continuously deteriorating for the past few years. He had diabetes, kidney failure and cardiovascular problems.
He got a brain stroke about one and a half months ago, after which he was admitted to Sir Gangaram Hospital in Delhi.
A special team of doctors in which nephrologist Dr. A. Of. Bhalla and neurologist were involved. She was treating them.
For the last two days, his condition remained critical and he was put on ventilator support. He eventually breathed his last on the morning of 4 August 2025.
Personality and ideology
Shibu Soren’s personality was extremely simple, but firm. He considered politics as a mass movement and stood with the general public.
His dress was traditional, language straightforward and thought revolutionary.

After the news of his death, the Prime Minister, President, Governor, Chief Minister, Leader of Opposition and thousands of activists expressed deep condolences.
The state government has announced his funeral with state honors. Condolence programs are being conducted in the entire Jharkhand including Dumka, Ranchi, Giridih, Bokaro and Dhanbad.
Shibu Soren’s life is not just a political story, but an example of struggle, identity and change.
He got a new identity to an entire state by staying connected to his land.
