Former principal Sandip Ghosh, who is facing the heat of investigation related to Kolkata RG Kar College and Hospital, has received another setback on Thursday. It is reported that his license to practice medicine has also been cancelled. The special thing is that a doctor also needs a license to treat a patient.
The West Bengal Medical Council (WBMC) on Thursday cancelled the registration of former principal of RG Kar Hospital Sandip Ghosh, an official said. Ghosh is currently in the custody of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the alleged rape and murder of a female trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital.
Ghosh’s name has been removed from the list of registered doctors prepared by WBMC. The official said that Ghosh’s license was canceled under various provisions of the Bengal Medical Act 1914. He said that Ghosh is an orthopedic surgeon and without a license he will not be able to treat patients.
Ghosh was arrested on September 2 by the CBI in connection with his alleged involvement in financial irregularities at the hospital. His arrest came after protests over the rape and murder of a female intern doctor on duty. He was later charged with tampering with evidence in the case.
Aniket Mahato, who has emerged as a prominent face among the junior doctors protesting after the woman doctor’s death, called the move a “victory”. “This is a victory for our dead sister. Ghosh’s medical registration should have been cancelled along with his arrest. We are happy that the West Bengal Medical Council has finally taken this step,” he said.
Ghosh was appointed principal of RG Kar Medical College in February 2021. He resigned from his post amid protests.
