The accused has been arrested. The accused was brought to the hospital on a stretcher after suffering from high fever. The nurse complained about the accused to the police, after which action was taken.
According to the complaint lodged by the nurse to the police, while she was taking care of the patient, the patient touched her inappropriately. The nurse further alleged that the patient not only touched her inappropriately but also used objectionable language towards her. The hospital administration immediately called the police, who reached the spot and arrested the accused. A formal written complaint has been lodged at the Ilambazar police station and investigations are now underway.
The nurse told what had happened
Recalling the incident, the nurse said, “During the night shift, a male patient was brought in with fever. As per the doctors’ advice, I was preparing to put him on drip when he misbehaved. He touched me and used obscene language. We feel unsafe working here due to lack of security. How can a patient behave like this?”
Giving details, Dr Masidul Hasan, who was on duty at the health centre on the night of the incident, said, “Around 8.30 pm, a patient named Abbas Uddin from Chotochak village came with fever. As soon as he came, he started misbehaving. After some examination, we advised him to give injections and IV fluids. When the nurse went to administer saline, the patient behaved violently and molested her by touching her inappropriately. We requested the patient’s family to cooperate, but the patient continued to misbehave. We have reported the incident to the police and authorities. If no action is taken, we will consider stopping work.”
It is noteworthy that this incident happened a few weeks after the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the government RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata. The main accused Sanjay Roy was arrested the next day in connection with this crime. The Kolkata Police and the hospital administration were criticized for handling the case of the trainee doctor. The case is now being investigated by the CBI.
