The Punjab unit of Congress has demanded postponement of the Panchayat elections scheduled for Tuesday. A Congress delegation led by leader of opposition in the Punjab Assembly and senior party leader Pratap Singh Bajwa met the Punjab State Election Commissioner in Chandigarh on Monday and requested him to postpone the elections by three weeks. The delegation alleged irregularities in the nomination process and also feared irregularities during vote counting.
Voting for 13,229 gram panchayats in Punjab is to be held on Tuesday i.e. October 15, but just a day before that, Congress has demanded a ban on it. Bajwa told reporters after meeting the State Election Commissioner that the delegation has requested to postpone the Panchayat elections by three weeks. He alleged that “large-scale irregularities” were committed during the nomination process as nominations of several opposition-backed candidates were “wrongfully” rejected.
He alleged that many candidates were not given the required No Objection Certificate (NOC) for filing nominations. The Congress leader said many people have approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court whose nominations have been “wrongfully” rejected. Bajwa said, “We want to postpone the election process by three weeks. We do not want to cancel the Panchayat elections.

He also claimed that instead of the voter list of January 1, 2024, the voter list of January 1, 2023 has been approved for the Panchayat elections, whereas the voter list of January 1, 2024 was approved for the Lok Sabha elections. Bajwa said that many voters who voted during the Lok Sabha elections will not be able to vote in the Panchayat elections.
He alleged that the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has printed fake ballot papers in each village for the posts of ‘Sarpanch’ and ‘Panch’ to “rigg” the Panchayat elections. Bajwa said, “We demand holograms to be placed on ballot papers. We suspect large-scale irregularities during vote counting as well.
