There were protests in many places in Kashmir over the death of Hezbollah chief Nasrallah, who was killed in an Israeli attack in Beirut, Lebanon. The protesters raised slogans against the Hezbollah chief that Nasrallah is our life. People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chairperson Mehbooba Mufti postponed her election campaign for today ahead of the third phase of voting on October 1 in solidarity with Nasrallah, while National Conference vice-president Omar Abdullah urged world leaders to condemn the Israeli bombings. As soon as the news of Nasrallah’s murder spread in Kashmir on Saturday, protests started in many areas of Kashmir, especially the Shia Muslim dominated areas in the capital Srinagar. Protests continued till late night in areas of Srinagar’s old city. On Sunday too, protests took place in some areas of Budgam in central Kashmir. A large protest rally was held by women in Magam, with protesters chanting, “Nasrallah is our life.” One of the women protesters said, “We are with you, the people of Lebanon. Don’t lose hope.” They raised slogans against Israel and America.
At the same time, shops also remained closed in some areas of central Kashmir in protest against the strike. Nasrallah was killed in a major Israeli airstrike in the Lebanese capital Beirut on Friday. Firing between Lebanon-based Hezbollah and Israel has continued since the Israel-Hamas war began on October 7. PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday evening announced her decision to postpone Sunday’s election campaign. “In solidarity with the martyrs of Lebanon and Gaza, especially Hassan Nasrallah, I am canceling my campaign tomorrow. We stand with the people of Palestine and Lebanon in this time of grief and resistance,” she said.
Meanwhile, PDP leader Iltija Mufti said that our hearts are heavy. Nasrallah fought for the people facing oppression in Gaza. The people here should have the right to protest. Meanwhile, People’s Conference President Sajjad Lone said, “We condole the supreme martyrdom of Martyr Syed Hassan Nasrallah.”
At the same time, NC leader Omar Abdullah urged the world to put pressure on Israel. He said, “From the very first day when Israel attacked Gaza, Palestine, we called on our central government, Prime Minister and world leaders to use their good offices and stop the killing of innocent people. We again called on world leaders We urge Israel to use its influence on Israel to stop the bombing.” Separatist leader Mirwaiz Omar Farooq expressed grief over the killing of Hassan Nasrallah and Lebanese civilians in Israeli bombing. “Mirwaiz, who is still under house arrest, said the people of Kashmir stand in solidarity with the brave and oppressed people of Gaza and Lebanon in the face of the ongoing massive aggression by Israel,” it said in a statement.
