Protests continue against the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in West Bengal. The agitating doctors demanding justice for the deceased colleague threatened that if their demands were not met, all the doctors in the state would go on strike on October 22. Doctors said they are in talks with their colleagues in other states. There may also be a nationwide strike on this issue on Tuesday. Junior doctors said that they, along with senior doctors, are giving the state government a deadline of October 21 to fulfill their demands.
Debashish Halder, one of the agitating junior doctors, said, ‘We want Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to sit for discussion. Implement all our demands. He said this after a meeting between junior doctors and their seniors in Kolkata. “Unless this is done, all junior and senior doctors in both government and private hospitals will be forced to go on strike on Tuesday,” he said. Halder said that his colleagues are continuing their indefinite fast with their demands.
Fast unto death continues for 14th day on Friday
The fast unto death of the agitating doctors demanding justice for the deceased female doctor and safety at the workplace entered the 14th day on Friday. A protesting doctor said that so far six junior doctors who have been on hunger strike have been admitted to the hospital after their condition deteriorated. Another protesting doctor, Sayantani Ghosh Hazra, questioned why Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee did not come to meet him. Hazra is on fast since October 5. Halder said that junior doctors will also protest in various hospitals on Monday. The protesting doctors will hold a big rally on Sunday and appealed to the citizens to join them.
