The Supreme Court today heard the rape-murder case of a female trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital. The bench headed by CJI DY Chandrachud gave a strict warning to the protesting doctors and said that they will have to return to work, otherwise action will be taken. During the hearing, the Supreme Court also reprimanded the Bengal government for the disappearance of post-mortem documents. An explanation has been sought from the government in the matter. The Supreme Court on Monday directed the CBI to file a fresh report by September 17 on its probe into the rape and murder of a woman doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. A bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud took note of the report filed in a sealed cover by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the CBI. “A status report has been filed by the CBI, it appears that the investigation is in progress, we direct the CBI to file a fresh status report. We do not wish to guide the CBI in its investigation,” the bench said.
What is the distance from the hospital to the principal’s house?
The bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud also inquired about the distance between the residence of the principal of RG Medical College and the hospital. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta replied that it is about 15-20 minutes away. The Supreme Court also sought clarification on the time of filing the report of unnatural death. Kapil Sibal, the advocate of Kolkata government in the case, said that the death certificate was issued at 1:47 pm, but the FIR was registered at 2:55 pm.
The court also asked about the time of search and seizure, to which Sibal replied that the search was conducted from 8:30 pm to 10:45 pm. The court asked if the CCTV footage related to the incident was handed over to the CBI. Solicitor Tushar Mehta confirmed that four clips of a total of 27 minutes have been given.
Three companies of CISF have been deployed in the hospital for security
The apex court has directed a senior officer of the Home Department of the West Bengal government and a senior officer of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) to provide housing facilities to the three companies of CISF deployed for the security of RG Kar Hospital. The court also directed to provide all the necessary security resources to the CISF personnel today itself.
