The Delhi Police has arrested a Punjabi singer from Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport for his alleged involvement with a gang that sends people to the US on fake visas through the ‘donkey route’. Giving information about this on Thursday, an official said that the arrest was made on Wednesday when 42-year-old Punjabi singer Fatehjit Singh, a resident of Jalandhar in Punjab, and other members of the gang were trying to send a passenger to the US through the ‘donkey route’.
DCP (IGI Airport) Usha Rangnani said that during interrogation, the accused revealed that he has studied till 12th standard and is a singer by profession. He has participated in many singing shows across the world.
The DCP said that the accused came in contact with an agent named Sultan Singh, who used to dupe people on the pretext of sending them to the US, and he started working with him to earn quick money.
The accused further said that a person named Gurpreet Singh had contacted Sultan Singh to go to the US. The accused had promised to arrange his travel and handle all the documentation work in exchange for Rs 50 lakh.
An advance amount of Rs 10 lakh was paid before the journey and Sultan Singh gave Rs 4 lakh as commission to the accused. It was also decided that the remaining amount would be paid after the passenger reached the destination.
The accused told the police that with the help of Sultan Singh and other associates, he had arranged the passenger’s travel to the US five times through various countries, but the plan did not succeed.
In the fifth attempt in March, the accused and other agents tried to send Gurpreet Singh to the US via Kazakhstan, but he was later caught by authorities in Kazakhstan and sent back to India, the DCP said. Kazakhstan authorities suspected that the passenger was travelling on a fake visa as two pages of his passport were found torn. It was found that in one of the previous attempts, Gurpreet Singh was provided a fake Brazilian visa, but he was sent back to India from Qatar. This time, two pages of the passport were removed by Sultan Singh.
Gurpreet Singh was questioned and arrested by the Delhi Police from the IGI airport in March. After questioning him, Sultan Singh, a resident of Tarn Taran in Punjab, was also arrested in March, but Fatehjit Singh was absconding.
The DCP said that investigation is underway to ascertain the involvement of other agents. The officer said that Fatehjit Singh’s bank accounts will be investigated to ascertain his possible involvement in other cases. Let us tell you that ‘Donkey Route’ is an illegal immigration technique, which is used for unauthorized entry into countries.
