Ahmedabad: The leaders of the Gujarat unit of the Congress welcomed the Central Government’s decision to include caste calculations in the next census on Friday. Along with this, he said that the credit for “compeling” Prime Minister Narendra Modi -led government to take this decision goes to party leader Rahul Gandhi. According to a release issued by the Congress, Congress leaders and activists led by the party’s city unit president Himmat Singh Patel and opposition Deputy Leader Shailesh Parmar gathered at Rajiv Gandhi Bhavan in Paladi area for thanking Rahul Gandhi.
Central government announced on 30 April
The central government on Wednesday announced that the caste calculation would be part of the next census. The decision was taken by the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs (CCPA). Patel, while addressing party leaders and activists, said that during his ‘Bharat Joko Yatra’ organized from Kashmir to Kanyakumari in 2023 to ensure social justice, Rahul Gandhi first raised the demand for caste publicity in the country. He said, “Rahul Gandhi has always supported the caste census, as the Congress is committed to ensure social justice and empowerment in the country. We raised the same demand even before the Lok Sabha elections last year. As a result, the BJP government is now forced to include caste calculations in the next census.”

Patel claimed that Prime Minister Modi always hesitated to implement the policies related to social justice and accuse the opposition parties of trying to divide the society by demanding caste census. He said, “There is no point in implementing social welfare schemes without caste census. This decision of the Center is the result of Rahul Gandhi’s tireless struggle, commitment and foresight. All backward and Dalit class will always be grateful to Rahul’s contribution.”
‘It is impossible to ensure justice without knowing the correct population of every caste’
At the same time, Congress leader Shailesh Parmar said that Rahul Gandhi forced the Modi government to declare caste census. He said, “It is the duty of the government to conduct caste census according to the Constitution. It is impossible to ensure justice for them without knowing the correct population of every caste. The government should conduct a census with transparency and set a deadline in this regard.” (With language inputs)
