The CBI investigation into the rape-murder case of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital is ongoing. The college’s former principal Sandip Ghosh has given misleading answers to questions during his polygraph examination and layered voice analysis. Officials gave this information on Monday. It is known that layered voice analysis is a new type of lie detection test. It is used to detect the reaction of the accused when he lies. However, it does not identify the lie. This technique identifies stress and emotional signals in the voice. The CBI arrested Ghosh on September 2 in connection with financial irregularities in the hospital. The federal investigation agency later also added charges of tampering with evidence against him.
During the interrogation, Sandeep Ghosh was subjected to polygraph test and layered voice analysis. According to officials aware of the developments, the report of the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) located in New Delhi has come. It stated that his answer was found to be misleading on some important issues related to this case. They said that the information obtained during the polygraph test cannot be used as evidence during the trial. But, the agency can use it to collect evidence that can be used in the court.
Complaint was not lodged with the police immediately
Polygraph tests can help assess inconsistencies in statements of suspects and witnesses. By monitoring their psychological responses (heart rate, breathing patterns, perspiration and blood pressure), investigators can determine if there are inconsistencies in their responses. The CBI has alleged that Ghosh came to know about the rape and murder of the trainee doctor at 9.58 am on August 9, but did not immediately lodge a complaint with the police. Ghosh lodged an allegedly vague complaint much later through the medical superintendent-deputy principal. However, the victim was declared dead at 12.44 pm.
Attempt to present as suicide
The CBI alleged, ‘Sandeep Ghosh did not try to lodge an FIR immediately. Instead, he tried to present it as a case of suicide, which is not possible in view of the external injury visible on the lower part of the victim’s body.’ It is alleged that Ghosh contacted the officer-in-charge of Tala police station Abhijit Mandal at 10.03 am and a lawyer at 1.40 pm. However, a case of unnatural death was registered at 11.30 pm. The CBI has also arrested Mandal in connection with the case. Officials claimed that Mandal was informed about the incident at 10.03 am on August 9, but he did not reach the crime scene immediately. He went to the crime scene an hour later.
