The CBI has brought back a man accused of running an international gambling racket from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to India. In a collective effort, the CBI, Gujarat Police and Interpol NCB-Abu Dhabi on Sunday brought back to Gujarat the alleged kingpin of an over Rs 2,273 crore gambling racket arrested in the UAE, an official said.
In a statement, the CBI said that on the request of Gujarat Police, Interpol had issued a red notice against Deepak Kumar Dhirajlal Thakkar. He was wanted in cases of criminal breach of trust, cheating, forgery, criminal conspiracy, destruction of evidence and offences under the Information Technology Act as well as the Gambling Prevention Act.
Thakkar is an accused in a criminal case registered at Madhavpura police station in Ahmedabad on March 25, 2023, for operating an international gambling racket. According to the CBI, he is allegedly the kingpin of an international illegal criminal gambling racket, which operates through special software. A red notice was issued against Thakkar from the Interpol General Secretariat on December 15, 2023, on the request of the Gujarat Police.
The statement said that a security mission of Gujarat Police travelled to the UAE and returned to India on September 1 with a red notice. The CBI coordinates with law enforcement agencies for Interpol in India.
