Panic has spread due to earthquake in Kutch district of Gujarat. A tremor of 3.7 magnitude was felt in the district on Monday morning. Institute of Seismic Research (ISR) gave this information. The district administration said that there was no report of any casualty or damage to property or anything else due to the earthquake. Gandhinagar-based ISR said the earthquake occurred at 10.44 am and its epicenter was 76 km north-northeast of Lakhpat. So far this month, earthquakes of more than three magnitudes have been felt twice in the district.

Gujarat is a high earthquake risk area

According to ISR, the intensity of the earthquake that hit the district on December 7 was recorded at 3.2. Last month, on November 18, an earthquake of magnitude four was recorded in Kutch. According to ISR data, earlier on November 15, an earthquake of 4.2 magnitude had hit Patan in North Gujarat. Gujarat is a high earthquake risk area.

13,800 people died in the 2001 earthquake

According to Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority (GSDMA) data, Gujarat has experienced nine major earthquakes in the last 200 years. According to the GSDMA, the Kutch earthquake on January 26, 2001 was the third largest and second most destructive earthquake to hit India in the last two centuries. Many towns and villages in the district were almost completely destroyed in the earthquake, which killed about 13,800 people and injured 1.67 lakh others. (with language inputs)
