The CBI, which is investigating the alleged rape and murder case of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, is also investigating the financial irregularities in the hospital. In this connection, the CBI has also started its investigation into the biomedical waste scam. In this sequence, the CBI has got a big clue. The agency has seized the computers of the hospital’s former deputy superintendent Akhtar Ali and the hospital’s former superintendent Bulbul Mukherjee for investigation. Sources said that the agency has also found some documents related to the report of the investigation committee related to the disposal of biomedical waste.
Akhtar Ali, the former deputy superintendent of the hospital, had leveled serious allegations of financial irregularities against Ghosh and had filed an application in the High Court to investigate the matter. The CBI has also recorded the statements of both Ali and Mukherjee in this case. In both the cases, former principal of RG Kar, Dr. Sandeep Ghosh and some influential people considered close to him are on the radar of the CBI.
Let us tell you that in 2022-2023, it was found that biomedical waste was being disposed of incorrectly in the hospital, after which an inquiry committee was formed. The committee’s report has named an employee of the hospital’s common collection plant, who was questioned about biomedical waste. During interrogation, the employee also named the caretaker of the guest house built in the hospital premises. The employee had given a total of three names, including the name of a security guard close to former principal Sandeep Ghosh. The inquiry committee found that the security guard had told the employee ways to earn money from biomedical waste.

Former Principal Dr. Sandeep Ghosh is also accused of illegally selling bio-medical waste outside the hospital during his tenure. According to CBI sources, the help of Bio Medical Waste Management Service Authorized has been sought to investigate this allegation. CBI has also received the names of two bio-medical waste recycling firms from other states. The agency can also question two firms including the waste transporters. The firm which was given the work of transporting bio-medical waste has also been questioned. The transportation firm has alleged that the amount of bio-medical waste in the hospital is decreasing every day.
What is biomedical waste
In any hospital, many types of medical equipment or items are used during the treatment of patients, which are thrown away after use. Such items include syringes, gloves, used saline bottles, test kits, etc., which are called biomedical waste. There are biomedical waste management rules for the disposal of such increasing waste in the country. Under this, some items are recycled, while the waste that poses a risk of infection is destroyed by burning. Most of the biomedical waste is recycled properly. There is a huge demand for them in some countries. Therefore, it is sold illegally and a huge amount is charged in return. It is alleged that similar illegal activities were going on in RG Kar Medical College as well.
