A new twist has emerged in the case of rape and murder of a female trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. Three audio clips related to this case have been made public, in which a female employee of the hospital repeatedly calls the victim’s parents. These calls reveal that despite repeated inquiries, the hospital gave confusing information to the parents about the victim’s condition.
In the first call, the assistant superintendent of the hospital requested the victim’s parents to come to the hospital immediately. She said, “Your daughter is not well. Please come to the hospital immediately.” When the father asked for more details, the staffer said that his daughter was being admitted to the hospital and the doctor would give more information.
At the end of the audio, the woman repeatedly advises the parents to come to the hospital. In the second call, the staffer describes the victim’s condition as critical and says that her condition is very bad. In the third call, the woman says, “She may commit suicide or is dead. The police are here. We are at the hospital and making this call in front of everyone.”
In this case, the victim’s parents have accused the hospital of giving them wrong information initially. They question why they were first told that their daughter was ill and later that she had committed suicide. It was earlier reported that Kolkata Police had informed the victim’s parents over the phone, but the police denied it and said that they did not make any such call. After this, the victim’s parents said that a woman calling herself ‘Assistant Super’ called them. She first said that “the girl is ill” and later said that “she has committed suicide.”
During the hearing of the case in the Calcutta High Court, the lawyer of the victim’s family, Vikas Ranjan Bhattacharya, said that the family was first told on the phone that their daughter was ill and later it was told that she had committed suicide. The lawyer claims that the family of the deceased was called to come to the hospital twice.
However, the state did not say anything in court about what was said on the phone. The three audio clips that have surfaced are said to be parts of two phone calls, but it is not clear whether these were separate calls or parts of the same call.
