Ruchika Mohanty, a student of Baksi Jagabandhu Vidyadhar Autonomous College (BJB), committed suicide in her hostel room on Saturday, July 2, 2022. Police found a suicide note near Ruchika’s body. It is written in the suicide note addressed to the parents that I was mentally harassed by 3 senior students. Because of this I failed to concentrate on studies.
Dutee Chand wrote in her post, ‘Senior didi used to call us in the room. She used to massage her body. She used to give us all her clothes and ask them to clean them. She used to harass me when I refused to obey her orders. I have also been a victim of senior ragging like this for 3 years.
Dutee Chand admitted that she had to massage the bodies of several senior didis during her stay in the hostel. Their clothes also had to be cleaned. Dutee Chand said, ‘When we were juniors, our senior didi used to harass us a lot. We did not speak our mind to anyone, because the problem solver was also a member of his group.
Dutee Chand said, ‘Today when Ruchika Mohanty, a student of BGB College, committed suicide. She accused three seniors of ragging in the suicide note, then I am able to put the matter of my harassment in front of everyone.
Dutee Chand said, ‘This incident had an impact on my mental state. I was feeling very helpless. After the incidents of ragging, it is very difficult for the hostel occupants to concentrate on the sport. Many give up and return home.
Dutee Chand has been selected in the Indian relay team for the Commonwealth Games 2022, starting in Birmingham, England this month. Dutee Chand recalled how the senior athlete used to comment on the social and economic condition of her family as well.
