A funny incident happened on the third day of the Lord’s Test between England and New Zealand on Saturday. Trent Boult was doing the 43rd over in England’s second innings. Joe Root was on strike. He plays the ball towards mid-wicket and calls for a quick single. Stokes ran but had to run back when he saw the fielder driving to his right.
The fielder hits a throw and the ball hits Stokes’s bat and goes towards mid-off. He immediately raised his hand and apologized. Root also raised his hand and copied him. This incident brought back memories of the final match of the 2019 Cricket World Cup. The exact same incident happened in the match played between England and New Zealand at Lord’s. England needed 9 runs from the last three balls, when Martin Guptill’s throw touched Stokes’s bat and went for the boundary.
England got 6 runs instead of 2 runs. England won the World Cup. After the Super Over was also tied, the hosts had won the match due to the excessive use of boundaries. Former India cricketer Virender Sehwag made fun of New Zealand on social media regarding this incident. Stokes was dismissed for 54 runs in the second innings of Lord’s Test.
England had lost four wickets till the score of 69 runs, but a 90-run partnership for the fifth wicket between Stokes and Root took the team over. Now England need 61 runs to win. Root 77 and Ben Fox are at the crease after scoring 9 runs. For New Zealand, Kyle Jamieson took four while Trent Boult took one wicket.
Earlier, the England bowlers kept their hopes of victory on the bowlers friendly track alive by taking six wickets in 34 runs in New Zealand’s second innings at Lord’s ground. After scoring 132 runs in the first innings, New Zealand’s second innings was reduced to 285 runs. England began to dominate the match after taking the new ball on the third day and took the remaining wickets during the opening 90 minutes of play.
