Downplaying his current poor form, star batsman Virat Kohli said he is “actually” going through the “happiest phase” of his life where he is not giving much importance to success or failure. Kohli has not scored a century in competitive cricket for almost three years and the current season of the Indian Premier League has been his worst season so far.
Kohli told ‘Star Sports’, “I am actually going through the happiest phase of my life. I am not paying much attention to what I am doing on the field. I have passed this stage. This is a stage of development for me. Former India captain Kohli, who stepped down from the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) captaincy after last season, is going through his worst phase with the bat, leaving millions of his fans disappointed.
Kohli has had a disappointing 15th season with the bat in the IPL with just one half-century in 13 matches for RCB. Kohli has been dismissed on the first ball thrice in the current season. He has only managed to score 200 runs and his average and strike rate are not up to his potential. The 33-year-old, however, added that his inspiration is not over.
Kohli said, “It should not be said that my inspiration is not the same, my inspiration will never end. The day my hunger ends, I will not play this game. But understand that some things are not in your control, only things in your control are what you can work on, which is hard work on the field and the same attitude in life. I feel that I am in the most balanced state in life and I am happy with who I am and the way my life is going.
For Kohli, success and failure on the field are becoming increasingly irrelevant. He said, “I can find no reason to be excited or disappointed in what is happening on the field.” Kohli’s comment, however, is not in line with what the cricket world, including his crores of fans, is feeling. His fans and experts are worried about the modern-day legend Kohli’s failure to score runs.
Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has advised him to take a break from cricket. Counted among the best batsmen of the modern era, Kohli scored his last international century in 2019. He has failed to motivate his team to win the title, after which he also gave up the captaincy of the T20 International team and RCB and then the Test team.
