IPL 2025 will now resume from May 17 and a total of 17 matches will be played. The final match has been decided on 3 June. The tournament was postponed for a week due to increased tension between India and Pakistan. Due to this sudden change, many foreign players will not be able to participate in the entire competition due to the national responsibilities of their countries.
Many foreign players will leave the tournament after May 26 and return to their country. In view of this situation, the Board of Control for Cricket in India has given special permission to the teams that they can sign temporary replacement players for the remaining matches. However, these players will not be able to retain in the upcoming IPL season and will participate in the 2026 auction.
Many foreign players will not be available
Some renowned international players such as Mitchell Starc, Jack Fraser McGark (Delhi Capitals) and Jamie Overton (Chennai Super Kings) will not be able to participate in the final stages of the IPL due to the national duty. Although some players will return but not all.
Temporary changes in replacement rules
Usually according to IPL rules, a player can be replaced only when he gets injured or withdraws from the season due to personal reasons and that too before the team’s 12th league match. But keeping in mind the current situation, there has been a temporary change in this rule.
The BCCI has informed the franchisees that if a foreign player withdraws from the tournament due to national duties, personal reasons or any health problem, then the player can be temporarily included in his place. However, these players will not be with the team in the next season and will have to return to the 2026 auction.
Replacements before suspension will remain valid
The IPL has also clarified that replacement players signed before the postponement of the tournament will be able to retain for the next season. For example, Delhi Capitals signed Sadikullah Atal, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Rajasthan Royals signed Luhan Drais Pritorius and Nandre Burger exactly 48 hours before the tournament was stopped. All these replacements will now be considered valid.
