Rohit-Sharma News: A big news has come out for the Indian cricket team. Rohit Sharma, veteran batsman and recently handled the Test team captaincy, has announced to retire from Test cricket with immediate effect. Rohit today made public information about his decision through social media, which has created a stir in the cricket world. However, he has clarified that he will continue to represent India in the ODI format.
Rohit Sharma issued a brief statement on his official social media handle, saying, “Hello to everyone, I just want to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It has been the greatest honor for me to represent my country. Heart thanks for love and support from all of you over the years. I will be a part of the Indian team in ODIs.”
With this decision of Rohit, his 11 -year -long Test career also came to an end. During this, he represented the Indian team in 67 Tests, in which he also took the responsibility of captaincy in 24 matches. He took charge of the Test team from Virat Kohli in 2022. In his Test career, Rohit has scored a total of 4301 runs with 12 magnificent centuries.
This shocking retirement of Rohit has come just before India’s upcoming England tour, where the team has to play an important series of five Test matches. The Indian team is going to be selected soon and now the selectors will have to search for a new captain for the Test team.
His previous term as a Test captain in Australia was nothing special and due to poor form, he had to sit out in some matches. India lost that series 4–1 and the Boxing Day Test played in Melbourne (MCG) proved to be Rohit’s last Test at the end of last year.
Significantly, Rohit got a chance to debut in the Nagpur Test against South Africa for the first time in 2010, but he could not play due to an unfortunate injury just before the toss. After this, he had to wait for three more years to make his mark in Test cricket. He finally made his Kolkata Test debut against the West Indies in 2013 and scored a brilliant century. In the next Test played in Mumbai, he also won his talent by scoring a century.
However, after the initial expectations, Rohit’s Test career was average for the next five years. During this time he scored only one century, which came against Sri Lanka in Nagpur in 2017. His red ball career got new heights in 2019 when he got an opportunity to open a domestic series against South Africa. In that three -match series, Rohit scored his only double century (212 runs in Ranchi) in two centuries and format.
His success against England also continued in 2021. He played a brilliant innings of 161 runs on Chennai’s difficult pitch and scored a significant 127 runs in India’s victory at the Oval. He once again scored two centuries against England in 2022 and won the inexperienced team and won the series 4–1 to India.
But after scoring runs at an average of 45.46 at the beginning of 2024–25 season, his form declined. In the next 15 innings, he could not score more than a single 50, causing his average to come down significantly.
His record as captain was also mixed. Under his leadership, India suffered a 0-3 domestic series defeat against New Zealand, which was India’s first domestic series defeat in 12 years. Overall, India won 12 Tests under Rohit’s captaincy and faced defeat in 9.
Rohit Sharma’s sudden retirement from Test cricket is a major setback for Indian cricket, while his experience and talent in ODI will remain important for the team.
