India’s tennis star Sania Mirza ended her mixed doubles journey at Wimbledon after a semi-final loss on Wednesday. This is his best performance so far in this tournament. Sania along with her Croatian partner Mate Pavic lost to defending champions Neil Skupski and Desira Kravski. This shattered his dream of winning the trophy on the grasscourt. Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar had come to watch his match.
After reaching the semi-finals of Wimbledon in mixed doubles for the first time in her career, Sania Mirza and her teammates Pavik lost 6-4, 5-7, 4-6 to Neil Skupski and Desira Kravsky in a tough fight. Sania had earlier announced that she would retire from the game at the end of the current season.
The pair of Mirza and Pevic defeated Dabrowski and Pearce 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 to reach the semi-finals. This is Mirza’s best performance at the All England Club in mixed doubles. Earlier, she had reached the quarter-finals in the years 2011, 2013 and 2015. The mixed doubles crown at Wimbledon is not in Sania’s trophy cabinet.
Earlier, Sania had lost to Lucie Hardeka in the first round of women’s singles. This was the last chance for the star Indian to win a career slam in mixed doubles, but he had earlier won the mixed doubles title with Mahesh Bhupathi. Sania along with Bhupathi won the 2009 Australian Open and 2012 French Open before winning the 2014 US Open with Brazil’s Bruno Soares.
In 2015, Sania Mirza won the Wimbledon title in women’s doubles with star Swiss tennis player Martina Hingis. The women’s pair also won the US Open title the same year before winning the Australian Open title the following year. This is one of the greatest female pairings of all time. Won 14 titles in 16 months.
