The last Test of the two-match series between India and Sri Lanka is to be played from March 12 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Rohit Sharma and Mayank Agarwal opened the innings in the first test match played in Mohali. Now discussions have started regarding Rohit’s opening partner in the second test match. Sunil Gavaskar, the great batsman and former captain of the Indian cricket team, has also given his opinion on this issue.
Describing his top-5 batsmen for the second Test, he described Mayank Agarwal as the ‘boss’ of batting in India. Along with this, he also told why Mayank Agarwal has got preference over Shubman Gill. Sunil Gavaskar said in a conversation with Sports Tak, ‘Shubman Gill has not played any kind of cricket for two months. He hasn’t even played in the Ranji Trophy. If you want to play for India, you need cricket and practice. Of course there is no doubt that he has talent, but in the end it all depends on the form.
Gavaskar said, ‘If you look closely, Mayank Agarwal Always score big at home. He bats like a boss in India. However, he is unable to score big abroad. He has at least one century or double century. In such a situation, they must be opened.
Gavaskar further said, ‘Hanuma Vihari is at number three. What has he done wrong? In South Africa, he got a chance and batted defensively, adding runs in India’s second innings. So they should get opportunities.
Sunil Gavaskar rated Shreyas Iyer as the most suitable at number 5. He said, ‘He is coming against Sri Lanka with three consecutive fifties. He started his Test career with a century on debut against New Zealand. In such a situation, it would be absolutely right for him to land at number 5.
