Russia has now added the ‘lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) movement’ to its list of extremist and terrorist organizations. This is sure to increase the problems of LGBT organizations. The move was in line with Russia’s Supreme Court ruling last November that LGBT activists should be designated as extremists. It’s a move that representatives of gay and transgender people say they fear could lead to arrest and prosecution.
Russia has added the “LGBT movement” to its list of extremist and terrorist organizations, state media said Friday. The list is maintained by an agency called Rosfinmonitoring, which has the power to freeze the bank accounts of more than 14,000 people and entities designated as extremist and terrorist. These include everyone from Al-Qaeda to American tech giant Meta and associates of late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny.
Russia has imposed strict restrictions on such organizations for the last decade
State news agency RIA said the new list refers to “the international LGBT social movement and its structural units”. President Vladimir Putin considers this shift towards decadent Western attitudes towards family values. Russia has therefore tightened restrictions on expressions of sexual orientation and gender identity over the past decade. Russia has passed laws prohibiting the promotion of “non-traditional” sexual relations and banning legal or medical changes of gender.
