Cyber Security Tools: Mobile, laptop, computer – no device is safe from cyber attacks and some virus keeps stalking from somewhere or the other. In such a situation, the Government of India, through its ‘Cyber Cleanliness Centre’, also known as Botnet Cleaning and Malware Analysis Centre, is providing free tools to identify and remove ‘botnets’. This project of the Digital India initiative under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology aims to create a safer cyberspace in India by helping clean and secure people’s systems by detecting botnet infections.
According to the center’s cyber hygiene website, the center works closely with Internet service providers and antivirus companies. It is operated by the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-IN).
What is botnet?
Bots are automated software programs designed with malicious intent and used to perform harmful actions on the Internet, such as stealing data, spreading malware, and launching cyber attacks. The ‘bot’ connects your device to a ‘botnet’, which is basically a network of infected systems. When a device becomes part of a botnet, the hacker (owner of the botnet) can copy all the data from the device, download malicious apps, block outgoing and incoming texts and calls. One can even gain access to sensitive information like net banking details and user name and password.
To protect your device from getting infected by bots, make sure you download apps only from trusted app stores or websites and avoid opening emails or links from unknown sources. To check if your system is infected with malware or No, download any of the free bot removal tools provided by Cyber Hygiene Center. For Windows, there are currently three free botnet tools listed on the website – eScan Antivirus, K7 Security and Quick Heal. If you want to check for infection in your Android device, try the ‘eScan Bot Removal’ tool from the Google Play Store or CDAC Download M-Kavach 2 developed by Hyderabad. eScan Antivirus: Antivirus company eScan Antivirus is providing smartphone security toolkit. It can be downloaded from Google Play Store. Antivirus company eScan is providing antivirus bot removal tool eScanAV. K7 is an antivirus software. In addition to the botnet detection tool, users can also install a ‘USB Armor’ for desktops, which lets users control the use of cell phones, pen drives, and other external storage devices. Whenever the user plugs in a new USB device, he or she is asked to verify it by entering the username and password. AppSamvid is another application that allows Windows users to run only pre-approved files on the operating system. The app can also help protect your operating system from viruses and malware like Trojans.
