Meta News: Meta, the company that owns Facebook, Instagram, Threads and WhatsApp, has announced the closure of fact checking program in America. Now instead a community based content moderation system on the lines of X will be implemented.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg defended the change in a Facebook video, saying that third-party fact checkers have created political bias that has eroded user trust. Fact checkers have harmed more trust than they have created and now ‘community notes’ will be used instead of fact-checking.
The Community Notes system is inspired by the X platform in which users can add notes or context to any post. That means the user himself will give opinion on that post.
new policies
Meta’s new policies include some major changes, such as easing of rules on immigration and gender identity. Users will get control over the amount of political content. Apart from this, the company’s teams working on security and trust will be transferred from California to Texas.
This move by Meta is the biggest change in recent times. The company will now reduce proactive scanning for hate speech and other violations and will focus more on user reports and automated systems. However, content related to terrorism, child exploitation, fraud and drugs will be strictly monitored.
What did Zuckerberg say?
According to Zuckerberg, the main motive behind this change is the desire to promote “free expression”. He said Meta’s social networks had gone too extreme in restricting users’ interactions, so the changes were pushed for.
trump effect
After Donald Trump’s victory in the elections, many big companies have openly come out in support of Trump. In November itself, Zuckerberg went to Florida and met Trump and had dinner with him at his resort. Meta later donated $1 million to Trump’s inauguration. Last week, Zuckerberg promoted Joel Kaplan, Meta’s highest-ranking executive closest to the Republican Party, to the company’s most senior policy role. And now Zuckerberg has said that Ultimate Fighting Championship head and Trump ally Dana White will join Meta’s board.
