Price of name? 35 million dollars! ChatGPT paid huge amount for this domain.

Mumbai What is in a name? A lot has been kept. Especially in online name i.e. domain name. No one can say when who will like which name and what its value will be. According to Name.com, only six domain names have sold for more than $30 million by 2022, with the top spot going to Cars.com with a sale price of $872 million.

Now a seventh contender can be added to this list. OpenAI, the company famous for Chat GPT, has reportedly purchased a domain named – Chat.com for more than $35 million. It is understood that Open AI has also given some of its shares in exchange for the purchase amount.

Sam Altman, founder of Open AI, wrote a post on

There is speculation that Open AI wanted a shorter domain name and hence took the new domain. But this speculation does not seem to hold much ground because just a year ago he had purchased the AI.com domain for $11 million.

In such a situation, there is a possibility that Open AI wants to remove “GPT” from its current Chat GPT domain.

Who has sold Chat.com?

HubSpot founder Dharmesh Shah bought the chat.com domain for $15.5 million early last year. His intention was to start a new project but things did not work out. Perhaps he thought that given the direction of AI and the growth of chatbots, he could sell this domain at a higher price so he sold it.

Shah has confirmed that the buyer of the domain is OpenAI and that he took his payment in shares rather than cash. Shah said he took the shares because he had known Altman for more than ten years and he did not like profiting from people he considered friends.
