Airtel announced a partnership with a blinkit last month, under which SIM cards will be delivered to buyers within 10 minutes at a minor fee of Rs 49. Under this service, buyers will have to do self-KYC to certify their identity to activate their SIM card and prepaid or postpaid connection. The service was launched in 16 cities across the country on 16 April. The initiative was stopped on 30 April, as the Department of Telecommunications objected to the idea of self-KYC by customers after receiving the SIM card. This was done in view of national security. Also, DOT asked all telecom companies in the country to ensure that the Aadhaar-based KYC certification should be done before issuing the SIM card to the customer.
