The two beneficiaries of Ayushman Bharat scheme in Gujarat who died after angioplasty in a private hospital, did not need this surgery. A Gujarat government official gave this information on Wednesday based on preliminary investigation of the case. The official described the matter as extremely serious and said that the Gujarat government will file a police complaint of culpable homicide and criminal conspiracy against the hospital management over the death of both the beneficiaries of Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY).
Under PMJAY, free health insurance up to Rs 5 lakh per year is provided to the needy people. Two beneficiaries of this scheme – Nagarbhai Senma (59) and Mahesh Barot (45) died on Monday, shortly after undergoing angioplasty as well as stent placement, at Khyati Multispeciality Hospital in Bodakdev area of Ahmedabad.
Patients were not given proper treatment after surgery
Angioplasty is a procedure to widen blocked or narrowed coronary arteries to improve blood flow to the heart. Principal Secretary (Health and Family Welfare Department) Dhananjay Dwivedi told reporters in Gandhinagar that the state government’s preliminary investigation has revealed that angioplasty was done on seven people even though there was no need for the procedure. Dwivedi said, “Our investigation team found that there was no need for angioplasty. Still, the hospital performed surgeries on people. Moreover, these patients were not given proper treatment after surgery. The result was that two of them died at around 10 pm on Monday night. “We consider this a very serious matter.”
A case of culpable homicide, forgery will be registered
“The state government has decided to file a complaint of culpable homicide, forgery and criminal conspiracy against the hospital management,” he said. Health Minister ordered investigation
Gujarat Health Minister Rushikesh Patel on Tuesday ordered an investigation into the death of two beneficiaries of Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme after angioplasty. Preliminary investigation revealed that the hospital had organized a free medical check-up camp in Borisana village of Kadi taluka of Mehsana district of Gujarat on Sunday. Patel told that after the camp, the hospital brought 19 villagers to its place saying that they would have to undergo angiography. He said that after angiography, the hospital performed angioplasty on seven of them and also inserted stents. Two of these seven patients died immediately after surgery on Monday.
