Delhi: 11 people died due to falling residential building in Mustafabad, 22 feared trapped; CM ordered an inquiry

A four -storey residential building collapsed in Delhi’s Mustafabad area on Saturday morning, killing eleven people, while many others are expected to be trapped in the rubble.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and police teams said that about 22 people were reported to be stranded at the time of the building collapse. So far 15 people have been rescued and taken to GTB Hospital, where doctors declared four people dead.

Additional DCP Sandeep Lama of North Eastern district told the media that many people have been injured and have already been rescued, who are being treated in a nearby hospital.

CCTV footage of building collapse in Delhi

The four -storey building collapsed late in the night, in which many people got stuck inside and along with the collapse of the building, dust blows, which was captured by a nearby CCTV camera.

What are the police and rescue teams saying?

According to Delhi Police, they were reported to have collapsed at Dayalpur police station at around 3.02 am. A team of police reached Gali No. 1, Shakti Vihar, where the building collapsed. Officials said the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Delhi Fire Service (DFS) and Ambulance services rescue teams were immediately taken into action.

Police said that about 22 people were reported to be stranded at the time of the building collapse. So far 15 people have been rescued and taken to GTB Hospital, where doctors declared four of them dead. He said that six people were discharged from the hospital, while five are undergoing treatment.

Additional DCP Lama said, “Currently, two NDRF teams and firefighting services are engaged in rescue operations.” “14 people have been rescued so far. Unfortunately, four people died, while 10 have been admitted to the hospital,” the police officer said. Later, the police said another person was rescued alive.

NDRF DIG Mohsen Shahidi told PTI, “We call it ‘pancake colps’ – a particularly dangerous type in which the possibility of escape is very low. Nevertheless, we hope that some people can be saved and we are actively looking for.” He said that the debris is gradually being removed as it is a highly congested area, which is making the rescue work challenging.

The use of heavy machinery to remove debris due to lack of space is limited. He said that apart from NDRF and fire service teams, Delhi Police personnel and volunteers are working together in rescue operations.

A police source said that the building would have collapsed due to construction work in “two-three shops” on the ground floor. The owner of the four -storey building, Tehsin and his family lives on the first floor while the tenants live in the rest of the building. Two members of the owner’s family were also injured in the incident. His wife is undergoing treatment at the hospital while his son is discharged. Police said Chandni (23), Danish (23), Naved (17) and Reshma (38) were killed in the building collapse.

The Chief Minister of Delhi ordered an inquiry into the building of the building collapse and said that the agencies are engaged in rescue work. He said in a post on X, “Proper treatment of all the injured has been arranged.” “I am deeply saddened by the tragic incident of building collapse in Mustafabad. Orders have been ordered to investigate the incident and strict action will be taken against the culprits.” The Chief Minister said, “I have deep condolences to those killed in the unfortunate accident. God should give peace to the departed souls and give the power to the bereaved families to bear this irreparable damage.”
