From 10 to 5 and then 3 and BJP's stronghold, why Congress-AAP could not form an alliance? Inside Story

Haryana Assembly Elections 2024: The chances of an alliance between the main opposition party Congress and Aam Aadmi Party in the Haryana assembly elections are over as AAP has announced its candidates on 20 seats. The party has said that it is preparing for all 90 seats and the second list will come soon. Earlier, talks were going on between the two parties for the alliance for the last few days but ultimately it could not take concrete shape. The main reason for this is the lack of consensus on seat sharing.

You had asked for 10 seats

Initially, AAP asked Congress for 10 seats out of 90 but Congress agreed to give only five seats. After a lot of discussions, deep brainstorming and political circumstances, Aam Aadmi Party leaders agreed to five seats but according to sources, Congress changed its stand. Now Congress offered three seats to AAP. According to India Today’s report, the three seats that Congress offered were strongholds of BJP. That means it was futile for AAP to expect any miracle on those seats.

Congress was giving seats which were strongholds of BJP

It is being said that the three urban seats which Congress had offered to AAP, BJP has been winning them for a long time. BJP has won some of these seats five times. AAP leaders did not like this move and offer of Congress. After this, seeing its chances ending, AAP announced 20 candidates. Now all these candidates will make a dent in the vote bank of Congress. Let us tell you that only last week both the parties had agreed in principle to form an alliance.

Now, ending the confusion over alliance with Congress, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Monday decided to contest the Haryana assembly elections alone and released its first list of 20 candidates. This decision has been taken in view of the long talks between AAP and Congress on alliance and the last date of nomination for the elections being 12 September. Voting in the state will be held on October 5. Counting of votes will be held on October 8.

AAP is preparing for all 90 seats

AAP has fielded candidates from Naraingarh, Assandh, Samalkha, Uchana Kalan, Dabwali, Meham, Rohtak, Bahadurgarh, Badli, Beri, Mahendragarh and Badshahpur. Congress has already announced its candidates from these seats. On the issue of alliance with Congress, AAP’s Haryana unit president Sushil Gupta said, “I want to say clearly that we have been preparing for all 90 seats from day one. There is not much time left for the elections now, the last date for filing nominations is September 12. So the wait is over now.”

He said that AAP is a strong option in Haryana and the second list of party candidates will also be released soon. Senior AAP leader Sanjay Singh said that the party will contest the elections in Haryana with full strength. Earlier, Sushil Gupta had said that if Congress fails to finalize an alliance with AAP for the assembly elections, the party will announce candidates for all 90 seats by evening.

According to the list of candidates shared by AAP, the party has fielded Haryana unit vice-president Anurag Dhanda from Kalayat, which is considered a stronghold of former chief minister and Congress leader Bhupendra Singh Hooda. Indu Sharma has been fielded from Bhiwani. Vikas Nehra will contest from Meham and Bijendra Hooda from Rohtak. The failure of AAP and Congress to agree on seat sharing in Haryana has also put a question mark on the possibility of an alliance between the two parties in Delhi, where assembly elections are due early next year.
