New Delhi. Violence broke out in Parbhani district of Maharashtra on Wednesday. There was a tense atmosphere in the city after the incident of tearing of the symbolic Constitution book in front of the Ambedkar statue. A large number of people came out on the streets to protest against the incident, whose demonstration took a violent turn. The protesters blocked the Parbhani-Nanded highway by burning tires while shouting slogans. Apart from this, incidents of stone pelting and arson took place at many places. Many policemen have been injured in the violence.
Heavy police force deployed in the area
After the violence, a large number of police forces have been deployed in sensitive areas of the city. Riot control police and SRPF have also been deployed to control the situation. The police tried to disperse the crowd by firing tear gas shells.

The protesters say that those who insult the Constitution should be given the harshest punishment. They have demanded hanging of the culprits. The violent mob set fire to vehicles on Basmat Road and Khanapur Phata and damaged them. Incidents of stone pelting and arson were also recorded in key areas like Station Road, Gandhi Park, and Shivaji Chowk. Shops and the signboards outside them, as well as CCTV cameras were also vandalized.

How did the violence start?
The violence started on Tuesday when a man named Sopan Dattarao Pawar (45) allegedly tore a replica of the Constitution placed in front of the statue of Babasaheb Ambedkar. As soon as the news of this incident spread, anger spread across the city and a bandh was called.

Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) President Prakash Ambedkar called the incident shameful. He said, “The insult to the Constitution by casteist Maratha miscreants in Parbhani is condemnable. This is not the first time that Babasaheb Ambedkar’s statue or Dalit symbols have been vandalized.”
