Udaipur. The panic prevailing in the Gogunda hills finally subsided when another fearsome leopard was caught. Just two days ago, this panther had brutally killed a five-year-old girl. The villagers’ breathing had stopped – it seemed as if death was lurking in every bush, every shadow. This time the cage was the last hope, and on Friday night at around 2:30, when a growling sound came from the cage, everyone was relieved. This was the third leopard which got trapped in the cage. On the night of September 25, in Kudau village of Majavad Panchayat of Gogunda, as soon as a five-year-old girl named Suraj moved away from the lap of her father Gamer Lal Gameti, a terrible sound came towards the forest. The panther had snatched the girl away. His little hands were waving in the air as he ran, and the father’s heart screams. The villagers engaged in the search found the girl’s severed palm in the forest. The decapitated body of an innocent child lying at a short distance from that palm – this scene brought tears to everyone’s eyes.
The villagers’ sleep and peace were all missing. With fear in their eyes, torches and sticks in their hands, people from every corner ran towards the forest. Every rustling sound in the forest seemed like the sound of that man-eater. The death of the girl had left a wound in the chest of the entire village. Everyone was just saying, “The danger is still not over. Surveillance is necessary.”
When the captured panther was seen in the cage, the forest trembled with fire in his eyes and a roar. He was healthy and strong, but he had two broken teeth. The Forest Department claims that this could be the same man-eater, but some officials are still hesitant in saying this for sure. In the eyes of the villagers, every leopard has now become a threat.
For the last three days, five teams were busy searching for this panther day and night. Four cages were placed in the surrounding areas, but he took time to get inside the cages. Finally, on Friday night, the panther came near that cage, the smell of meat attracted him. Then at 2:30 in the night, his growling alerted everyone in the village.
Two panthers had been caught earlier also, but now everyone in the village is asking – was this the last one? Or is death still lurking in the forest?
A story that snatches peace from the village nights. For the last one week, the number of panther attacks has been increasing in Gogunda and surrounding areas. Two panthers had already been caught, whose teeth and claws were still alive with the screams of those innocent people who had become victims of this dreaded hunter. The darkness of fear is spreading in the hearts of people, and the fear of news of a new death coming from the forest every day is now settled in their veins.
“Since the girl’s death, it seems like every night, this forest is ready to swallow us,” says Gulab Singh, who has witnessed the heart-wrenching events of the village with his own eyes.
