New Delhi, . The United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution on 22 December 1992, after which World Poverty Eradication Day began to be celebrated on 17 October every year. Its main objective is to eliminate poverty in developing countries. This day is celebrated every year on a large scale with the aim of promoting understanding among all about the plight of people around the world living in poverty and the wider society.
International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, observed every year on 17 October, aims to promote understanding and dialogue between people living in poverty and the wider society. Ending poverty is not just about helping the poor – it is about giving every woman and man the opportunity to live with dignity.
The purpose behind celebrating the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty on October 17 is to highlight the massive efforts made to eradicate poverty. According to UNESCO of the United Nations, the history of World Poverty Alleviation Day is actually related to the date of 17 October 1987. This is the same date on which more than a million people gathered at the Trocadéro in Paris and raised their voice together for the people suffering from extreme poverty, violence and hunger under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights made in the year 1948. These people declared that poverty is a violation of human rights.
Although this day is being celebrated in the world since 1993, it is a matter of great regret that even today the number of poor in the world has not decreased but has actually increased and poverty has increased even more. Even in India, the situation of poverty is not very good.
