Under the leadership of Indian-American Congressman Raja Krishnamurthy, 15 lawmakers introduced a resolution in the US House of Representatives to declare January as Tamil Language and Heritage Month.
This proposal has been introduced at a time when Pongal, the main festival of Tamil speakers, is being celebrated.
“As a Tamil-American, I am proud to introduce this bipartisan resolution to honor the Tamil language, heritage and culture in the United States and around the world,” Krishnamurthy said.
Five other Indian-American lawmakers Ro Khanna, Ami Bera, Sri Thanedar, Pramila Jayapal and Suhas Subramanian along with Nicole Malliotakis, Ilhan Omar, Yvette Clarke, Sarah Jacobs, Deborah Ross, Danny Davis, Deena Titus, Dawn Davis and Summer Lee This proposal has been presented jointly.
“America is a collection of different languages, cultures, ideas and traditions,” Krishnamurthy said. I hope this resolution highlights the rich and distinct culture as well as the incredible accomplishments of the more than 3.5 million Tamil-Americans today.”
More than 80 million people around the world speak Tamil, one of the oldest languages in the world.
Tamil-Americans United PAC welcomed the resolution and said it highlights the rich history of the Tamil people and their invaluable contribution to the modern world.
