However, it is famous about the two stalwarts of Tamil Nadu politics that when they were friends, they were examples for the people and even when they became enemies, they were presented as examples. Here we are talking about MGR i.e. MG Ramachandran, who increased his status in politics through South films. MG Ramachandran’s full name was Marudur Gopalan Ramachandran but he became famous as MGR or MG Ramachandran. He was born on 17 January in Sri Lanka but his birthplace was India. Another superstar of South films and veteran politician M Karunanidhi was a close friend of MGR. However, politics took such a turn that both became enemies of each other.
Friendship between writer and actor became an example
It was films that brought MGR and Karunanidhi together. MGR acted in films while Karunanidhi was a scriptwriter. The history of films tells that Karunanidhi had written nine films for MGR. Among these, the 1950s film Manthiri Kumar brought MGR a lot of fame as an actor. This also deepened the friendship between the two.
This film, released in 1952, increased the stature of Karunanidhi.
It was the year 1952, when the Tamil film Parasakthi was made. This film showed strong opposition to Brahminism, which was very similar to the ideology of the political party Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam i.e. DMK. Although this film was initially banned, when it was released, Karunanidhi got a lot of political benefit from it. At the same time, Ramachandran was emerging as the messiah of the poor. Even though these two stalwarts of the film industry had a deep friendship, both were associated with different political parties. Karunanidhi was moving ahead in the DMK, while Ramachandran was associated with the Congress.
MGR joined the party on the advice of a friend
MGR was greatly influenced by the ideas of Mahatma Gandhi and followed the path shown by him, but in 1953 he broke his ties with the Congress. After Mahatma Gandhi, MGR also liked the ideology of DMK founder CN Annadurai and Karunanidhi knew this. Keeping this in mind, when MGR broke ties with Congress, Karunanidhi convinced him to join DMK. Karunanidhi got another big benefit from this. MGR’s fans also started joining DMK and soon MGR became the most important face of DMK.
Karunanidhi was made CM, but the distance kept increasing
DMK government was formed in Tamil Nadu in 1969 under the leadership of Annadurai. However, Annadurai could remain Chief Minister for only 18 months and he died. MGR was then made the treasurer of the party, who made his friend Karunanidhi the chief minister. It is said that it hurts to see a friend in trouble, but if the same friend moves ahead, it makes the heart burn. Later, something similar happened with these two stalwarts of Tamil Nadu politics.
And the two friends parted ways
Karunanidhi felt that even though he was the Chief Minister, people liked MGR more. That is why Karunanidhi fielded his son MK Muthu to compete with MGR in Tamil films. This was the time when MGR alleged that Karunanidhi was deviating from the party’s ideology. On this, Karunanidhi tried to separate him from the party and indirectly succeeded, because after some time MGR left DMK.
Snatched the throne of Tamil Nadu from his friend
MGR left DMK, but did not retire from politics. He formed a political party named All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in 1972. Here too MGR’s supporters stood with him and the politics of Tamil Nadu completely changed. Amidst the dominance of Congress, DMK and Janata Party, AIADMK also contested elections in Tamil Nadu and formed the government leaving everyone behind. When MGR assumed office in 1977, he remained Chief Minister until 1987, when he died.
After MGR’s death people started committing suicide
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MG Ramachandran died of a heart attack on 24 December 1987. This created a stir in the entire state. MGR’s fans started committing suicide. Many people committed suicide and some committed suicide by consuming poison. Many fans committed suicide by cutting their veins. According to one figure, at least 30 people, hurt by Ramachandran’s death, committed suicide.
