The youngest of his five brothers, A. Nageswara Rao was born on 20 September 1924 in a very ordinary family in Ramapuram, Krishna district, Andhra Pradesh. Veteran Telugu producer-actor Akkineni Nageswara Rao, who was honored with the Indian film industry’s biggest Dadasaheb Phalke Award, died in the early hours of Wednesday, January 22, 2014 in Hyderabad. 91-year-old Nageshwar Rao was suffering from cancer for the last several years. Nageswara Rao’s son and actor Nagarjuna, fondly called ‘ANR’, said Mr Rao died in his sleep. Nageswara Rao is remembered for acting in hit films like ‘Tenaliram Krishna’, ‘Devdas’, ‘Maya Bazaar’ and ‘Missamma’.
Nageshwar Rao is survived by three daughters and two sons. His son Nagarjuna is well known to Hindi film audiences, and Nagarjuna’s wife Amala has also acted in Hindi films. Many grandsons of Nageswara Rao have also established themselves as actors. In his long career spanning over seven decades, Nageswara Rao acted in around 250 Telugu and several Tamil films, and is currently starring in the upcoming film titled ‘Manam’, starring all three generations of his family.
